The Carney Boys - a documentary series

A poetic documentary of a boy’s experience at a fair. A simple moment shared by a man and the child of his child, framed to return to at any moment in their future. A look at a classic fairgrounds, though the eyes of a timeless boy.

On a day in October I took the boys for a walk, and framed our time together in a documentary poetic film that shows the unscripted simplicity of their discovery in freedom.

This past holiday weekend I was moved at the simplicity of my grandson’s interactions within an event that has such profound meaning for so many. And all I could do was hope for change. That and present my thoughts inside this film.

We are honored and moved to have such a tender and wise story between a grandfather and his grandson exploring life in the official selection for JAFEST2023 Poetry Film Competition and to screen it to Portuguese and international audiences from April 12-15 in Lisbon! 

THEME 1: SEPARATION & BELONGING

In our turbulent world Separation and Belonging raises the question of where and to whom we belong. To ourselves, perhaps? To nature, to memories, to family, to love, to dreams fulfilled and unfulfilled? Until we parted we did not know we could feel so strongly, we did not know that our good memories could shrivel and vanish, that we may no longer find comfort in them. Through separation we learn a lot about ourselves and our world, don’t we?
